A fire at the vacant International Woolen Mill is being investigated as arson in Sanford.

Heavy Smoke and Flames Coming from the Vacant Building

“Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames from a portion of the long-vacant mill complex and worked for several hours to bring the fire under control,’ said Shannon Moss, Public Information Officer, Maine Department of Public Safety.

Several Agencies On the Scene of the Fire

Firefighters and multiple local law enforcement agencies responded to the fire including the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office, the Sanford Fire Department and the Sanford Police Department.

No Injuries Were Reported

There were no injuries reported for the fire that started around 9:00 am Monday.

Unoccupied Building Monitored by Local Authorities

“The building has been unoccupied for several years and is regularly monitored by local authorities due to safety and trespassing concerns,” according to Moss.

Fire was Intentionally Set and Under Investigation for Arson

The fire is under investigation for arson after officials on the scene determined the fire was intentionally set.
