A fire that started in a carport Friday night forced the evacuation of a residence in downtown Saint-Léonard, N.B.

Local firefighters were called to the home at 7A Soucy Road shortly before 8 p.m. The fire in the carport was fully involved when crews arrived and had spread to the adjacent house, according to a report by CIMT. Witnesses said the flames were visible from the TransCanada Highway.

The blaze heavily damaged a side apartment and there was smoke damage throughout the two-storey house.The carport was a total loss.

A woman who lived in the apartment was displaced by the fire, according to Dan Bedell of the Canadian Red Cross. The woman said she expected insurance would cover emergency needs.

RCMP officers and employees of Énergie NB also responded to the scene Friday night.

It’s not known at this time what ignited the blaze.
