Fire Destroys Former Car Dealership in Grand Falls, N.B.
More than 50 firefighters battled a blaze Sunday in Grand Falls that destroyed a building that once housed a car dealership.
Officials say the fire broke out shortly after 10 a.m. at the former Toner GMC facility on Portage Road and quickly spread throughout the building.
Fire crews from Drummond, St-André, St-Léonard and Perth-Andover provided aid to the Grand Falls Fire Department. It took firefighters most of the day to extinguish the flames.
The fire was adjacent to the site of the new Grand Falls Fire Station. Officials say this could delay construction, since building materials for the project were stored inside the former car dealership.
The building was recently purchased by the city of Grand Falls and has been used as a public works depot.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
