Elderly Woman Dies in Fire in Eliot, Maine
State Fire Marshals say an 83-year-old woman is dead and her son was seriously injured in a fire overnight in the southern Maine town of Eliot.
The body, believed to be that of Beverly Webber, was found in her apartment over the garage at a home she shared with her son and grandson. Public Safety Department spokesman Steve McCausland said.
Webber owned the property and the body was found in her bedroom. A positive identification has not yet been made.
Webber’s son and grandson lived in the attached house and both escaped the fire. Ralph Webber III, 57, attempted to rescue his mother but broke his hip as he jumped out of a second story window to escape the flames, McCausland said.
The fire started in the garage and was reported just after 11 p.m. Monday. The woman’s apartment was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.
Fire investigators say the heavy damage to the building is making their investigation into the cause of the blaze difficult.
