October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. While Maine is one of the safest states in the nation, sadly, many people, particularly women, do not feel safe in their own homes.

Domestic violence knows no boundaries. It exists everywhere, from mansions on the coast to trailers in the deep Maine woods. It is often lurking behind closed doors of homes, churches, and even work places. It doesn't matter your race, gender, age, or sexual orientation, domestic violence has no limits. People live in fear, isolation and violence every single day.

But there is something we, as Mainers, can do about it right here in Aroostook County! You can reach out! Whether it be as a victim yourself, or if you would like to help.

You can bring awareness, by wearing a purple ribbon all this month to celebrate the courage of survivors, or you can even choose to attend an awareness event. You can reach out to the Hope & Justice Project right here in Aroostook County.

All you have to do is call 1-800-439-2323 or visit the Hope & Justice Project website.

It's important to recognize that domestic violence does happen in our community and that we can do something about.
