Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen Will Star in, Produce Dark Romantic Comedy ‘Flarsky’
Sometimes, news of new releases makes sense. Sometimes you can’t help but do a double-take. In today’s “Huh” news, Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen have both signed on to star in and produce a romantic comedy about a struggling journalist’s long-lived crush on his former babysitter, titled Flarsky.
According to Deadline, the film is slated to begin production this August. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the script, by Dan Sterling, was on the Hollywood Black List a few years ago, and has just now been picked up. His other credits include The Interview, which also starred Rogen alongside James Franco, and episodes of sitcoms including The Office and King of the Hill.
Here’s the plot, according to THR:
It centers on an unemployed journalist (Rogen), battered by his own misfortune and self-destructive ways, who endeavors to pursue his childhood crush and babysitter who now happens to be one of the most powerful and unattainable women on Earth (Theron).
At first glance, the description is the kind to make one think, “Yikes,” but, to be fair, this is only a one-line outline, and Theron and Rogen are both talented performers in their own right. It’s good to see that Theron will be producing, and THR is calling this a dark comedy, so maybe there’s something there. Rogen is one of the guys behind AMC’s Preacher, after all, which is certainly a departure from his usual bro-comedy aesthetic. This’ll be one to keep on your radar as more cast announcements are liable to start popping up soon. Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies, The Night Before) will direct.
