At about 5:30 Sunday morning, Caribou Dispatch received a 911 call from someone claiming there was an altercation on the Old Washburn Road in Caribou and one victim needed medical attention.

Caribou Police responded to find one victim in the driveway of the residence and another walking down the road. Caribou Fire and Ambulance was notified and transported one person to Cary Medical Center where he remains. The other individual was transported to Cary Medical Center by an officer and was treated and released.

Police say the suspect, 30-year-old Zachary Smith of Caribou, had returned to the residence and barricaded himself inside with possible weapons. The Maine State Police Tactical Team was notified and a perimeter was established. Smith gave up without incident after a 2 hour standoff. One weapon was recovered.

Smith is charged with Aggravated Assault, two counts of Domestic Assault, Creating a Police standoff and Criminal Mischief. He was arrested and transported to Aroostook County Jail where he remains. His initial court date is March 8.

Caribou Police Officer Aaron Marquis was assisted by Sergeant Mark Gahagan, Officers Douglas Bell, Kevin St. Peter and Philip McDonough, Maine State Police and the Caribou Fire and Ambulance Department.
