Good Housekeeping is my go-to for all things holiday, so I take it seriously when they weigh in on food safety. I recently turned to G.H. to answer the question, "Are Easter eggs safe to eat?"

Nope. Don't eat 'em! I mean, you can if you don't have them out on the dining room table to be adored. If you're cool with enjoying them in the refrigerator, then go on ahead and peel and eat. Otherwise, if they've been at room temperature for more than a couple of hours-throw them away.

Here's more info about those hard-boiled Easter eggs:

  • Store them in an airtight container in the fridge where they will keep for about a week.
  • Only use food coloring dyes, like cake decorating dyes.
  • The shell protects the egg from bacteria, once you peel it, eat it right away. But only if you used food coloring to dye them.
  • Before boiling the eggs, check to see if they are still fresh by dropping them in a pot or bowl of water. If they drop to the bottom they are good to go, discard the floaters.
