The annual archaeological dig at Colonial Pemaquid State Historic Site began on Monday in Bristol. It will continue through Friday.

Archaeologists will begin excavating the enlisted men's quarters of two of the forts this week. Organizers say the officers' quarters were excavated in the 1970s but the enlisted quarters of the fort have yet to be explored.

On Monday, archeologists found coins, buttons and a cannon ball, among other items.

Colonial Pemaquid Historic Site is listed as a National Historic Landmark.
