‘Gravity’ Director Alfonso Cuaron Returns to Mexico For His New Film

Alfonso Cuarón, the director behind Children of Men and Gravity, is returning to Mexico for a new, untitled project. He will be directing and also writing the film, his first shot in Mexico since 2001’s Y Tu Mamá También.

Deadline reports that the film will show “a year in the life of a middle-class family living in Mexico City in the early 1970s.” The film will be produced by Gabriela Rodriguez, who worked as a producer on Gravity, and Nicolás Celis, producer of this year’s Desierto, which stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan as a border crossing agent and was directed by Cuarón’s son, Jonas.

Cuarón is partnering with Participant Media for the project, the studio that most recently produced The Light Between Oceans. David Linde, Participant Media’s CEO, said of the director, “Alfonso is a master storyteller, who breaks cultural boundaries around the world by skillfully connecting audiences through the power of cinema. We are elated to be joining him on this film.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cuarón has described the film as “close to his heart,” returning him to Mexico as a filmmaker for the first time in 16 years. The film is expected to begin shooting this fall, so casting news may be on the way pretty soon.
