4-Year-Old Who Died from Gunshot Wound Identified in Maine

A 4-year-old who died from a gunshot wound in Lewiston has been identified by police and more details have been released.

Jasper Smith died Saturday after he was taken to Central Maine Medical Center and pronounced dead, said the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Police responded to a 911 call at 93 Pierce Street around 4:55 am. Several family members were at the home when the shooting happened.

The Maine State Police said a 9mm handgun was found at the residence. The gun’s registered owner was 36-year-old Robert McCoy.

The investigation is ongoing with the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit South, the Lewiston Police Department, and DHHS.
