Vintage Snowmobile Race to Again Benefit ‘Brian’s Ride’

Following its successful debut last year, the Mega Meltdown Vintage Snowmobile Racing event is coming back to Caribou on Saturday, March 23.

Funds raised by the Snowmobile Racing event will benefit ‘Brian’s Ride,’ a nonprofit organization that supports cancer patients through the Jefferson Cary Cancer Center. The Mega Meltdown will again be held behind the Northern Maine Brewing Company on outer South Main Street in Caribou.

Brian’s Ride is a special fund created in memory of Brian Caldwell who died from cancer.  Over the past two years the fund has helped nearly 100 local cancer patients and their families and has raised more than $40,000.

The vintage sled racing will consist of sleds from the 1960’s through 1980s with ‘leaf spring’ suspension, racing race in various classes. The event will attract a number of sledders from throughout the state vying for points to earn the ‘high points’ trophy. Local snowmobilers who have vintage sleds are invited to participate. Sledders will register their machines the day of the race.

Race organizers say the event drew a great crowd last year, despite very cold temps, and are hoping for even bigger numbers this year.

The event, certainly, will not be lacking for snow and conditions are forcasted to be good.

There will also be kids racing as well as a Women’s Open, Teens Open, and other multiple classes.

In addition to snowmobile racing the Brewing Company will also offer outdoor music, a bonfire and food.  Admission to the event is $10 for adults and $5 for students and those under 12.  There is a $20 registration fee per sled entering the racing program.  Pits for sleds will be open at 8:00 am and racing starts at 11:00 am.
