Tractor-Trailer Jacknifes in Storm in Westfield

State police say a tractor-trailer rig operated by a Virginia man jacknifed in poor road conditions in Westfield Friday afternoon. 

Trooper Robert Flynn responded to a call of a commercial vehicle crash on Route 1 in Westfield just after 1 pm.  An unloaded rig operated by 45-year old Luis Enrique Rodriguez of Staunton, Virginia left the road after his trailer got caught in the slush on the road.

Flynn says the trailer began moving side to side, eventually pulling the 2006 Volvo tractor and causing Rodriguez to leave the road. When the truck left the road the trailer struck and broke a utility pole causing the unit to jack knife, doing additional damage to the rear of the tractor.

The truck is owned and operated by Rodriguez under the company name of Bernard Trucking out of Staunton, VA. No one was injured in the crash.

Significant snowfall, sleet and ice accumulation today made for difficult driving conditions. Speed too fast for the conditions is being blamed for the accident.

Brewer Service of Mars Hill towed the rig for repair. An Emera Maine crew also assisted on site.
