A tractor Trailer unit hauling a full load of un-packaged potatoes jackknifed on Interstate 95 in Island Falls around Mile Marker 278 South bound, said the Maine State Police. The report came into the Houlton Regional Communications Center Tuesday at approximately 10:30 AM.

Trooper Hunter Cotton responded to the scene and investigated the crash. He determined that the operator, 39-year-old Marko Kekovic from Woodstock, New Brunswick, was traveling South in the driving lane when he lost control of his truck and jackknifed into the median.

Speed and poor road conditions were factors in the crash, said police.

The truck lost a substantial amount of fuel as a result of the accident. DEP was advised and responded to the scene.

The Island Falls Fire Department. Westerdahls Towing arrived on scene and moved the trailer out of the roadway. DOT provided signage and assistance at the scene as well.

The truck, trailer and load of potatoes was removed Wednesday when the weather conditions improved. The trailer was emptied and the scene cleaned up which took most of the day, said police. The interstate was reduced to one lane for a large portion of the day.
