Tiny Harris, Kandi Burruss Win Songwriting Credit on Ed Sheeran’s ‘Shape of You’
"Shape of You," Ed Sheeran's massive Divide hit, has two new credited songwriters: Kandi Burruss and Tameka Cottle — best known to those who could stand a '90s R&B refresher course as Tiny Harris, T.I.'s wife.
Burruss thanked Sheeran for the nod on Instagram, writing, "Congrats #EdSheeran for having the #1 album! & thank you for allowing @majorgirl & I to share in the success of #ShapeOfYou! #1 for 7 weeks!"
Prior to her tenure as one of the Real Housewives of Atlanta, Kandi Burruss was a successful musician and songwriter, who was in '90s girl group Xscape with Tameka "Tiny" Cottle. In addition to writing Destiny's Child's "Bills Bills Bills" in 1999, Burruss teamed up with Tiny that same year to write TLC's third No. 1 hit, "No Scrubs."
While Burruss didn't specify why she and Tiny gained writing credits, sharp-eared critics of "Shape Of You" have observed a similarity between the track and "No Scrubs." Sheeran and his team may acted to prevent another copyright infringement lawsuit, as the ginger songwriter previously faced one for similarities between "Thinking Out Loud" and Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On" and another alleging that much of "Photograph" was lifted from a 2012 song by X Factor contestant Matt Cardle.
Both Burruss and Cottle now have official credits on "Shape Of You," as the ASCAP registration reflects.
