Today is the last official day of summer, and here in our northern wonderland it goes down as one of the wettest on record, and possibly the wettest since the early Jurassic period.

According to the National Weather Service Office, where meteorologists faithfully collect every drop of precipitation that falls from the sky in fancy rain-catching devices, nearly 21 inches of rain fell in Caribou this summer.

Let me rephrase that. This summer in northern Maine/New Brunswick, we got nearly TWO FEET of rain.   The biggest offender was July 17th when nearly 4 inches of rain fell in the Presque Isle-Caribou area.  Oh, you got FIVE where you are?  (Sorry if you planned an outdoor wedding on that day).

So, what was the bright side?  Well, uh, the water table’s up for one thing.

The average temperature over the summer was actually slightly above normal.  And the Caribou weather office statistics show we actually had 38 days this summer when it did not rain. That’s well over one-third!

So what are you waiting for?  Get outside and enjoy the last day of summer—the sun’s out.
