Look Up to the Maine Sky Thursday Night
We have another supermoon this week, and you don't want to miss this one in the Maine skies as it will be the last for a while. The next supermoon isn't on the calendar until October of 2025.
We have been spoiled with supermoons in 2024. You may have remembered the Hunter's Supermoon last month, and the weather was perfect in Maine for catching spectacular views and photos.

Weather Looks Promising for the Supermoon This Week in Maine
The weather forecast for Thursday evening to view the last this year’s fourth and final supermoon in Maine, looking bigger and brighter than usual as it comes within about 225,000 miles (361,867 kilometers) of Earth, looks promising as we can expect chilly temperatures, but clear skies. There is rain projected for Friday, however, that may threaten catching the "Beaver Moon."
Why is The Supermoon in Maine This Week Called the Beaver Moon?
This year, the Beaver Moon is the final of four back-to-back supermoons that began in August with the Sturgeon Moon, followed by September's Harvest Moon, and October's Hunter's Moon.
The Hunter's Moon was the brightest and biggest of the four, but the Beaver Moon, if we're able to see it, should still be impressive.
It is called the Beaver Moon because it coincides with the time of the year beavers typically build their winter dams, according to timeanddate.com.
What Makes a Full Moon a Supermoon?
The best explanation that I found comes from space.com and Dr. Fred Espenak, a retired NASA astrophysicist and eclipse expert, defines a supermoon as a full moon that occurs when the moon is within 90 percent of its closest approach to Earth. Dr. Espenak has compiled a list of all the supermoons (including those that fall under the 90 percent category) occurring during the 21st century.
