Going to college isn't like going to high school. Unlike public school, a student going on to higher education has to pay for it. Just how much do students in each New England state have to pay on their loans, on average, per month?

Higher education isn't free, but there are many opportunities for scholarships based on high school performance, and some institutions will actually flat out pay for part of a student's education if they did very well in high school.

Those things help, but there's always something you'll owe when you graduate and have to pay monthly bills for your student loan.

Wallet Hub recently researched to find the highest student loan payments across the country, and five of the six New England states were among the top 12 highest student loan payments in the country.

Let's break it down for you.

# 12 - Rhode Island

The smallest state in New England has the second smallest student loan payment, with an average of $217 per month.

Yale happens to be in Connecticut, so you can see why they make the list with an average payment of $227 per month.

#3 - New Hampshire

Keene and Plymouth are in New Hampshire, and students going to college in the state will pay an average of $240 per month.

#2 - Massachusetts

#1 - Vermont

Vermont tops the charts with the most expensive student loan monthly payment in the entire country at $248 per month.

There's one missing from this list, however.

#32 - Maine

Maine is way down the list at #32, and it has some fantastic colleges and universities, including the University of Maine and UNE. The average monthly student loan payment in Maine is $184 per month.

That's cheap compared to the rest of New England.
