Still Without Power? Here Are Maine Places You Can Go To Get Warm

At last count, Wednesday afternoon, 253-thousand Mainers were going into their 3rd evening without power. And with the wind chill expected to bring nighttime temps to zero, many folks are facing freezing conditions without water, warmth, or in some cases even food.

Because of this, many towns have set up Warming Centers for folks to visit to charge up phones and devices, get a hot cup of coffee, use the restroom, maybe shower, and even, at some, get a hot meal.

Here's a list of some spots around Eastern Maine where people can go to get warm.

Waldo County is opening up an emergency Overnight Shelter at the Waldo County YMCA in Belfast. Organizers say the shelter will be operational from 6 PM Wednesday until Friday at noon.

We're told the shelter will have a sleeping area with cots and sleeping bags and will be providing meals. It's recommended you bring a suitcase with any supplies, charges, clothes and personal hygiene items you might need.

A warming center has been set up at the Bangor Parks and Recreation Center on Main Street in Bangor. It will be open until 9 PM Wednesday for people to charge their phones and devices, according to Bangor Fire Chief and Emergency Management Director, Thom Higgins.

"Showers also are available. The public should enter through the lower entrance on the Main Street side of the building. "

Higgins says the Bangor Public Library is also open till 8 PM daily as a place to get warm.

"Other warming centers are available at the Bangor Area Shelter at 263 Main St., which is open during daytime and nighttime hours; the Brick Church at 126 Union St. at nighttime; the Mansion Church at 96 Center St. at night; the Hope House at 179 Corporate Drive; and the Well Warming Center/Jericho Road at 146B Center St. during daytime hours."

Hollywood Casino and Raceway is also offering space for folks to come in, get a hot cup of coffee, or refill their water and warm themselves.

"We have opened our banquet room to the public for those who are without power due to the recent storm. Tables and chairs with power have been set up to charge devices. Water is also available for those who wish to fill their jugs or bottles. Coffee and light refreshments will be provided as supplies last."

If you're in Orland, the Orland Community and Fitness Center is offering a hot meal and a hot shower!

"We are running on regular power! We have showers available for those still without power. Please check in at the office upon arrival for availability. Fill water jugs. Get a hot meal from Cory (Salsa Shack) operating out of the kitchen window! until 3:30."

They say they will be open for folks to get warm from 5 AM to 7 PM Monday through Friday and 8 AM to -4 PM Saturday.

The Hermon Baptist Church on Route 2 in Hermon is open until 7:30 PM for folks who need a warm place to go or to use the bathroom.

The Town Hall in Milford will be open for people to keep warm. According to the Milford Fire/Rescue Page, the coffee is brewing.

The Brewer Parks and Rec say the Joseph L. Ferris Community Center will be open until 5 PM.

In Greenbush, we hear the Helen S. Dunn School is offering folks from the Greenbush community a chance for a shower on Thursday, December 21st from 7 AM to Noon. They will have soup and sandwiches (free of charge) from 11 AM to 11:45 AM.

In Vassalboro, the Vassalboro Community School on Webber Pond Rd. will be open for folks who need it.

"No school tomorrow at VCS 12/21 for students and staff. VCS will continue to be open as a warming shelter for charging stations, showers, and warming with food served."

The Town of Norridgewock says folks will be transitioning from the shelter set up at the Mills School to one the Red Cross will set up.

"The shelter in Norridgewock will be phased out by mid-morning on Thursday 12/21. Those still in need of shelter will be welcomed at a centralized location hosted by the American Red Cross. After the closure, Norridgewock residents may come to the Town Office between 9 and 3:30 for warming or charging.

If you have a need that may be unmet, you are encouraged to call 2-1-1 for resource assistance."
