Just about all of us have experienced a teacher at some point in our lives. Although teaching can be rewarding, the benefits that teachers receive may not always line up.

Many teachers would admit that they are underpaid and overworked in relation to the load they bare when teaching kids.

Most teachers I've known don't like to complain, because they have the heart of a teacher, but a bit more help would go along way.

It's been said that the salary of a teacher consistently fails to keep up with the pace of inflation and is among the lowest paying occupations that require a bachelor's degree.

Our friends at WalletHub have compared Washington D.C. and all 50 states based on 22 key indicators which include, but are not limited to income growth, average salary, union strength, public school spending, and teacher pension, to name a few.

Here are some interesting results found in WalletHub's findings

  • Maine ranks 50th in Lowest Annual Salaries for Teachers (Adjusted for Cost of Living)
  • Maine ranks 3rd in Lowest Teacher-Pupil Ratio compared to other states
  • Maine ranks 40th among best states for teachers with the state of New York ranking #1.

What do you think are some of the biggest issues facing Maine teachers today? Feel free to leave a response in the comments section below.
