Senator Angus King was in Presque Isle Today

Maine's Independent Senator Angus King was present for the 2013 Sinawik luncheon at Northern Maine Community College in Presque Isle this afternoon.

You might be wondering what ‘Sinawik’ is. Well, it’s simple really. Sinawik is Kiwanis spelled backward. The Kiwanis Club of Presque Isle formed Sinawik in 1976 as a separate for-profit entity with its own Officers and Directors in partnership with Northern Maine Community College to provide lower-cost housing to area home-buyers while giving NMCC trade and technical occupation students’ construction experience. Sinawik finds a buyer through a first-come, first-served application process and provides the funds for residential construction students to purchase supplies and build the home.   The funds raised through the project are used for scholarships to students who have worked on the Sinawik home and nominated by their instructors.

Senator King was on hand to help present this year’s scholarships, along with Pam Buck, Project Coordinator, Kiwanis President Keith Madore and Sinawick President Kathie Beaulieu.

Scholarship Recipients were John Akridge – Residential Construction Senior, Bruce Ricker – Residential Construction Senior, Mike Hooper – Residential Construction First Year, Timothy Walker – Computer Aided-Drafting Senior, and Matthews Jenkins – Electrical Construction Senior.
