Rumford Police Dealt With A Scary Active Shooter Incident

A man firing a gun in a bizarre incident prompted Rumford Police to tell residents to shelter-in-place.

The Rumford Suspect Allegedly Hit a House With His Car and Set It On Fire

Rumford Police were called to an active shooter incident on State Route 232 in Rumford Corner Village at approximately 8:00 Tuesday evening. When the officers arrived at the scene between East Bethel Road and South Rumford Road, they confirmed that several shots had been fired in the area. The suspect had also crashed his vehicle into a residence at 61 State Route 232 before allegedly setting the house on fire. Officials say the man then began firing additional rounds into the residence before leaving the scene on foot. Residents were advised to shelter-in-place until the suspect could be taken into custody.

Officials Say the Man Was Hospitalized With a Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound

The suspect was located at approximately 1:00 Wednesday morning and officials say he was suffering from a life-threatening, self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to Rumford Hospital and later transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland for further treatment. Once the individual was located, Rumford Police lifted the shelter-in-place order and reopened Route 232.

Police have not commented about whether the suspect knew the person(s) who occupy the home he allegedly set on fire. No motive for the incident has been given. This incident remains under investigation.
