Ellsworth Fire Officials Say Rumors of a Fatality Were Inaccurate

Officials say there were some erroneous reports that the fire included a fatality. According to a post on the Ellsworth Fire Department's Facebook page, that information was inaccurate. Officials say everyone got out of the building safely, except one person who had to be rescued. That person was taken to Northern Light Hospital in Ellsworth with life-threatening injuries. The person whose name has not been released was later transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Officials Say 2 Other People Were Displaced By the Fire

A team of investigators from the State Fire Marshal's Office determined the fire was started by careless disposal of smoking materials. The fire caused significant damage in the room where it originated, as well as to the roof. Four other people were displaced by the fire. Despite the damage, officials say the building is salvageable.
