State Police say one man is dead and a woman and a baby were wounded in a domestic violence shooting in Calais Wednesday evening.  Calais Police officers John Preston and Joseph Bartlett responded to the home on Main Street around 6 p.m.  26-year-old Daniel Pinney was shot and killed in an exchange of gunfire shortly after the officers arrived.

According to Steve McCausland of the Maine Department of Public Safety, Pinney reportedly shot 21-year-old Megan Sherrard of Calais and her 6-week-old baby boy, Luca, as they were fleeing from the house.

McCausland said Megan Sherrard  had a doctor’s appointment for her baby earlier in the day  Wednesday but never showed up.  Her father found her empty car in the physician’s parking lot and contacted Calais Police, concerned for her safety.

Detectives say it appears that Pinney confronted Sherrard in that parking lot and forced her to return with him to his house.   Pinney had been out on bail for a domestic violence criminal threatening charge, and he was ordered to have no contact with Sherrard.

Sherrard was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor and is undergoing treatment for multiple gunshot wounds. The baby is also being treated at the hospital for a gunshot wound to the foot. Pinney was the baby’s father.

Officer Preston was grazed by a bullet in the shootout and was treated at Calais Regional Hospital.

State Police detectives are investigating the shooting of the woman and her baby boy. Because a police officer was involved in the fatal shooting, the Maine Attorney General’s Office is investigating as well.
