AUBURN, Maine (AP) — Two passing motorists are being hailed as heroes for saving the lives of three men trapped inside a burning vehicle.

Auburn Fire Department Battalion Chief Dean Milligan says there's "no doubt" in his mind that the passers-by saved the men who were trapped inside the vehicle after it rolled over and burst into flames at about 6:20 p.m. Tuesday.

He says the man and the woman were in separate vehicles when they came upon the crash scene before emergency responders arrived.

The woman attacked the fire with bottled water and a jacket. The man used a knife to cut the seat belts and pull the men from the vehicle.

Two occupants of the vehicle were taken to the hospital. The driver was cited for driving without a license.
