Normally, when people think about parks in Maine, they imagine our great state parks or Acadia National Park.

They generally don't immediately think about all of the great town and city parks we have, but these are some of the best parks in the nation.

Some of these local parks are well known, like Deering Oaks Park in Portland or Broadway Park in Bangor, many others really fly under the radar.

Recently, I discovered a small park in Aroostook County that more people need to visit.

Houlton Riverfront Park

Tucked away in the Northern Maine town of Houlton is the Houlton Riverfront Park.

You'll find this cool park just off North Street.  The park features a large parking area, picnic tables, benches, a lush lawn, and public restrooms.

There are also 'museum in the streets' plaques that go over, in detail, the history of Houlton and the surrounding towns.

Probably the coolest part of the park is the foot bridge that crosses the Meduxnekeag River.

Sure, it won't take a long time to explore, but it is a cool place to hang out for a few minutes.  The day that I visited I saw several families going for walks in the area and a few people who were sitting on a picnic table doing some writing or sketching.

If you are originally from the area, like I am, you may remember that spot was for many years used as a parking lot.  I believe it was where some of the town's municipal vehicles were stored.
