Maine State Police say 62-year-old Edward Smith of Nova Scotia was driving a motor home on the northbound off ramp at the start of the Island Falls construction detour at around 2:30 a.m. when he failed to stop at the Route 2 intersection. Smith ended up going through the guardrail and down a steep embankment.

State Police say two out of the three occupants were trapped inside. 64-year-old David Pierce and 68-year-old Stephen Daubs, both of Nova Scotia, were passengers in the vehicle.

All three sustained injuries in the crash. They were transported by ambulance to Houlton Regional Hospital.

The RV is considered at total loss.

Maine State Police were assisted at the scene by Island Falls, Oakfield and Houlton Fire Departments.
