Birds flying into windows isn’t a new thing, we’ve all seen or heard of it from time to again. But, it seems to be happening more often in Maine, leaving us to wonder why?

Some homeowners and businesses are noticing an increase in birds crashing into windows.

According to bird experts from All About Birds, birds can’t easily tell a reflective window from the trees or the sky it mirrors against. And because Maine is so lush with forests, it makes it even more challenging for migration of the birds to safely fly without getting confused and crashing into the side of a building.

This issue has even hit a Portland business recently, according to WGME.

The Maine Employers' Mutual Insurance Company (MEMIC) building on Commercial Street has been experiencing an increasing number of birds crashing into their windows. This is happening even more during the time they are supposed to be migrating.

So, the folks in Portland put forth effort to help minimize this with decals.

Nick Lund is an Advocacy and Outreach Manager at Maine Audubon and he thanked MEMIC's efforts and spoke about how there are many ways people can make their windows safer for birds

So for anyone who is having a problem with bird crashes in their windows, Nick says,

"There are a variety of solutions, from insect screens to curtains to decals, All the bird needs to understand is that it’s not open sky or a tree, it’s a window, and they should fly elsewhere."

Other Maine businesses like L.L. Bean in Freeport and Maine Audubon's Gilsland Farm in Falmouth, have also been doing similar window decals to help protect the local birds!
