A sequel to 2008’s Mamma Mia! movie is coming next year.

Sorry, maybe you didn’t hear me. A SEQUEL TO MAMMA MIA! IS COMING NEXT YEAR.

Today we finally get out first official look at a trailer and I have a lot of questions. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is a kind of prequel-within-a-sequel, going back in time to the story of Donna Sheridan (Meryl Streep) and her three ill-fated love affairs with Sam Carmichael, Harry Bright, and Bill Anderson. In the present, Donna’s daughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) is pregnant with her first baby, and her mom’s friends Rosie (Julie Walters) and Tanya (Christine Baranski) come visit to help her out and give her a much-needed confidence boost.

Here’s my big question: Is Donna dead?? Meryl Streep isn’t in the trailer a whole lot, and doesn’t have any interaction with Seyfried except for flashbacks to the first movie. What happened to her??

My second, somewhat-less-pressing question is: How much of this takes place back in time? I love Lily James and I’m sure the lads who play the young versions of all of Donna’s lovers will be great, but the charm of the first movie 100% comes from the joy of watching Christine Baranski vamp it up on a beach, and Meryl Streep cartwheeling around her house in overalls, and Pierce Brosnan doing his best to belt “SOS” off the edge of a cliff.

Anyway, here’s a poster:
