A recent study shows these are the most popular ‘slang’ words and phrases in our Pine Tree State.

Listen, Mainers have their own slang and a way with words that’s entirely unique—calling it an understatement would be putting it lightly. That said, with our distinctive way of speaking and the things we say, we’re not so sure if folks 'from away' can always understand us!
With that in mind, how do we even determine what’s considered the most popular ‘slang words’ in Maine? Was there a survey we missed out on?
In the article ‘These Are the Most Popular Slang Words by State,’ Apartment Therapy highlights a study conducted by Preply that analyzed Google Trends search data and surveyed over 1,000 participants to identify slang preferences across the U.S. The study categorized slang into two groups: ‘vintage slang words’ and ‘trending TikTok terms.’
Alright, now that we’ve covered that, what are Maine’s most popular slang words? What are the phrases we Mainers use most to try and stay ‘hip’?
According to Apartment Therapy and that study by Preply, Maine's most popular ‘vintage slang word’ is ‘Daddy-o,’ a term originally used by jazz musicians as a friendly way to express camaraderie. Meanwhile, Maine's top ‘trending TikTok term’ is ‘Sksksk,’ often described as ‘keyboard smashing.’ Apartment Therapy also notes that this was the most popular term nationwide in 24 states.
Well, there you have it. Apparently, our most popular ‘vintage slang word’ is ‘Daddy-o,’ and our most popular ‘trending TikTok term’ is ‘Sksksk.’
