Maine Is 2025's 2nd Least Diverse State in America

While Maine excels in so many things, and while Mainers are such a great bunch, we consistently rank as one of the least diverse states.

The terms ‘diverse’ or ‘diversity’ can be vague and mean different things depending on the context, which is why this report looks at several different criteria to measure it.

So, given all of that, how do we know that Maine is one of America’s least diverse states in 2025, and who is making that call?

This report from WalletHub compared all 50 states across six main categories using 14 specific metrics, each scored on a 100-point scale. The weighted average of those scores was then used to give each state an overall ranking.

Well, with all that in place, what qualities and criteria put us in the position of being the second-least diverse state?

According to WalletHub and their recent report highlighting the ‘Most & Least Diverse States in America (2025),’ we ranked 49th overall, 31st in Socioeconomic Diversity, 49th in Cultural Diversity, 32nd in Economic Diversity, 38th in Household Diversity, 49th in Religious Diversity, and 8th in Political Diversity.

Maine isn’t at the very bottom, but it’s close—the only state ranked behind us overall is West Virginia.

WalletHub continues that Maine also landed in 50th place for Racial & Ethnic Diversity, a stark contrast showing three times less diversity than the top-ranked state in this category, Hawaii.
