Maine Woman Rescued After Falling Through Ice Chasing Dog

ADDISON, Maine (AP) — A Maine woman has been rescued after falling through the ice on a river while chasing a dog.

Maine Marine Patrol Sergeant Colin MacDonald tells the Bangor Daily News that the woman was shouting that she couldn't hang on much longer when firefighters used a kayak to pull her to safety Friday night in Addison.

MacDonald says: "It was happy ending to a potentially very tragic situation."

He says the woman had dragged the kayak behind her when she went out on the ice as a safety precaution.

He says her husband called 911 when she fell through but hypothermia set in quickly.

MacDonald warns that she should not have gone out on the ice and says the thickness can be erratic, particularly where there are currents or a combination of salt and fresh water.
