In an effort to control the rabid raccoon population state officials have decided to drop vaccine packets in rural wooded areas across Maine, according to an article from the Associated Press.

The AP states that with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s help, airplanes will release roughly 351,000 oral rabies vaccine baits targeting raccoons, foxes and other critters that may carry rabies.

The article says that 13 out of 16 counties in Maine have reported cases of rabid animal encounters with a total of 42 reported cases so far in 2018. Officials say that's too many in one year.

The vaccine bait pellets will be dropped by plane in Northern Maine and delivered by hand and ground vehicles in more populated areas, according to the AP.
