Our news team in Bangor reported the story & covered State Police Colonel John Cote’s news conference Wednesday:
Cote said just before 7:30 a.m., Det. Benjamin Campbell came across a car that had spun out and was still partially obstructing the southbound lane of I-95, just past the Coldbrook Road Overpass on I-95. Campbell stopped to offer assistance and, after assessing the situation, called for another trooper to help with the accident.
As he stood outside the disabled vehicle, a tractor trailer/log truck driven by 52-year-old Scott Willette of Patten began changing lanes, to avoid the vehicles. But, as he passed, two wheels became separated from the truck. One rolled harmlessly into the median, but the other struck Campbell, causing grave injuries. EMTs, police officers, and firefighters rushed to the scene to render first aid, before Campbell was taken to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. He succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Willette is the owner/operator of the truck and has been questioned by police. He also agreed to a blood test, all of which Cote said is standard procedure in these types of accidents. Officials say he stopped immediately when he realized what had happened.
Chief Cote said Campbell would have turned 32 on Monday. He leaves behind his wife Hilary and 6-month-old son Everett, who live in Millinocket. A procession will escort Campbell's body to the Maine State Medical Examiner's Office this evening, as is standard procedure
