Just in time for Earth Day, WalletHub has released a culmination of information dubbing the most eco-friendly, environmentally-conscious, and most efforted states for climate-change contributions in the nation.

The state that did the best was our New England neighbor Vermont. Massachusetts also ranked well on the list, too. Maine, too, made the list as one of the greenest states in the nation.

Overall, Maine's scores ranked respectably well for a state that markets itself as a nature lover's paradise.

Maine is in the top 10 of 2022's Greenest States

Overall, Maine ranked #10 in the nation for most environmentally friendly in the United States. This puts together scores from three categories compiled for this survey which include environmental quality, eco-friendly behaviors, and climate-change contributions.

Here's the top 10 including Maine at #10:

  4. Maryland
  5. California
  6. Massachusetts
  7. Minnesota
  8. Connecticut
  9. South Dakota

The states that ranked worst included West Virginia as worst in the nation, followed by Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Alabama.

Maine ranks well in the details

Maine tied first with three other states for the highest percentage of renewable energy consumption. Maine tied first in this category with Oregon, South Dakota, and Washington state.

Maine's ranking with the individual categories shows that our state is very competitive with our environmental-friendliness. Maine's environmental quality ranked 10th highest in the nation and Maine's eco-friendly behaviors ranked 5th best in the nation. The one category that was surprisingly low was where Maine ranked for our climate change contributions, ranking 25th in the nation.
