25 Places Maine Veterans Can Get Free Food on Veterans Day 2024
Many Maine restaurants will offer free food to veterans on Monday, November 11, 2024, for Veterans Day.
Here's Why Veterans Day is Always Celebrated on November 11th
November 11, 1918, was the day fighting in World War I ceased when an armistice between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Although the Treaty of Versailles, which ended the 'Great War,' wasn't signed until June 28, 1919, at the Palace of Versailles, outside Versailles, France, November 11 has always been considered a day worth recognizing.

In 1968, the Uniform Holiday Bill moved many holidays to a Monday to ensure a three-day weekend for Americans. However, veterans were never comfortable with that idea for Veterans Day, and many felt it changed the day's meaning. In 1975, President Gerald Ford officially changed the date to November 11, out of respect for its importance.
Small Gestures of Appreciation for Veterans Happen Every Day in Maine
I always love small gestures of appreciation for veterans and members of the military, like a child who has been taught to say 'Thank you for your service,' or someone who anonymously buys a meal for a veteran at a restaurant. That second one has happened to my Dad many times and it touches my heart every time. These people have dedicated part of their lives to protecting our freedoms. They deserve our respect and gratitude.
Many Maine Restaurants and Clubs are Providing Free Meals for Veterans Day
So I spent some time this week finding places around the state where veterans can get a free meal and I came up with quite a few. Some of these restaurants are part of national chains, so you might ask the local franchise whether they're participating. While not all say they will require proof of service, have your military/veteran ID with you. If you know of a place I missed, please add the info in the comments under the link to this article on the station's Facebook page.
From all of us at Townsquare Media, THANK YOU to all military members, past and present, for your service!
