Maine and hunting is like peanut butter and jelly and is one of the states oldest traditions and now, it’s modernizing.

According to Bangor Daily News, a new law is being rolled out in Maine that would allow you to tag deer from your smartphones! That means, no orange vest required!

This law is already in effect as of September 24.

The law was sponsored by sponsored by Sen. Donna Bailey.

According to the article, Bailey says,

“Deer hunting is a tradition that preserves our heritage and promotes the outdoors, in addition to helping folks put food on the table and fill their freezers for the winter, Allowing for the electronic tagging of deer can ensure that hunting is accessible and available to the hunters of today and tomorrow.”

Electronic Deer Tagging in Maine

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW) is started a pilot program to tag deer via electronically to make it easier for Maine hunters to report harvests. This will also give biologists data they need to collect.

Other states like New Hampshire are already offering online deer registration. Not to mention Maine already has a pretty awesome online turkey tagging system.

Do you think this will keep hunting relevant for the up and coming generation of Maine hunters?

There are a few questions thought. Will it work throughout all zones or be limited to certain days? The MDIFW will let lawmakers know by January 14th how the pilot program went and report if it’s a viable option for the future.

What do you think about electronically being able to tag deer?
