Maine is a true national treasure.

From its beautiful rocky coastline to the rolling foothills and mountains, the Pine Tree State is a natural wonderland. I like to call it an environmental amusement park for all those looking for adventure and serenity.

Now with more people stepping outside to enjoy nature, it should be to no surprise to see a rise in attention from national publications. This includes a recent hiking post from one of the most iconic magazines in the country, Reader's Digest.

The popular periodical published an article about the best hike in every state. While you could make an argument for about 100 trails here in Maine being the best, the one chosen by Reader's Digest is an outstanding choice. The magazine's selection is the Mount Kineo State Park trail network.

Located right on Moosehead Lake, this picturesque hike combines four trails that take you up to the summit of Mount Kineo, as well as circle the park. The mountain itself has an elevation of 1,789 feet, making it quite a sight, especially considering it abuts a lake.

The trail is rated easy to moderate depending on the reference guide you use. However, it's pretty safe to say that the majority of folks out there could easily complete these trails.

At the top of the mountain, the hiker will experience some of the best views in the state. There are amazing sights of Moosehead Lake, as well as unobstructed views of beautiful Northern and Western Maine.

The trail network is a little over six miles of mixed terrain. It includes the summit run, as well as a beautiful stroll on the perimeter of Mount Kineo State Park. It's simply a great way to spend a day outdoors.

Here is a little of why Reader's Digest selected the Mount Kineo State Park Trails as Maine's best.

To get to Mount Kineo State Park, you need to take a shuttle boat from the town of Rockwood...Choose from four different routes (Indian, Bridle, Carriage or North) to the summit, where a converted fire tower sits. From the top, you’ll see a range of mountains in all directions, plus Moosehead Lake down below.

If you want an authentic Maine outdoors experience, look no further than this incredible trail network. I guarantee it will not disappoint.

And while you are out there, make sure to experience the rest of this incredible state. Once you fall in love, you will never let go.
