Maine’s Beautiful Cemeteries and The Stories They Have To Tell
Maine has several beautiful and unusual cemeteries that we drive by everyday without really thinking about them.
Beautiful Cemeteries Made Me Think of a Sitcom?
When I started writing on this topic, I immediately thought of an episode of the TV show 'Frasier,' in which Frasier's brother Niles loses his burial plot with the incredible view as part of a divorce. His father, Martin, tries to make it all better so he buys Niles a plot in a simple cemetery near the interstate that's also near the gardening shed. t's not picturesque, but they'll be the first to get mowed.

A Variety of Factors Can Make Maine Cemeteries Beautiful
Maine is a scenic state, so it's not surprising that so many of its cemetery's are also appealing. I once lived across the street from a cemetery, and wanted to go for walks there because it looked so pretty.
History plays a part in the beauty of cemeteries , as well, with aging headstones and interesting burial patterns. Mausoleums, monuments with decorative statuary, and marble benches can also add to the atmosphere.
We Can't Forget the Stories of Spooks and Ghouls
And, of course, no article about cemeteries is complete unless you include the ghost stories. Many cemeteries in Maine are the site of ghost tours, like Bangor's Mount Hope Cemetery, that is a popular place for historic walking tours, and lots of tales of its most evil or controversial occupants.
I've never thought about what kind of view I'd like to have at my final resting place. But I can understand wanting it to be beautiful for those who come to remember me.
