Experts Say Maine’s 207 Area Code Is Safe For 25 More Years
Here in New England, most of us have only one area code. Mainers in particular love the 207 area code. It's the only one used in Maine, and by the look of things, will continue to be the only area code in Maine for years to come.
Is the 207 Area Code Running Out of Numbers?
Running phone numbers is a problem that experts have been pondering over and over again. What would happen if Maine ran out of phone numbers, thanks to so many handheld devices that require phone numbers?
There was a time when you had one phone number. That was it. It was a landline at your home, and if you were lucky, you might have two phones connected to the same line. You're from my generation if you ever picked up the phone and heard your mother talking with your grandmother and were told to hang up by your mom.
The good news is, we aren't in danger of running out of numbers, yet. If we were, we would have to consider adding a second area code to the state of Maine, and not many residents want that.
According to a new report from the North American Numbering Plan Administrator, the 207 area code is now projected to last until the first quarter of 2050, five years longer than they thought in April 2025.
