Kesha is one tough cookie, and recently opened up to Cosmopolitan about how it feels to be empowered.

“I’ve taken ownership of myself. I’m taking control of my life and my name and the music it’s attached to,” she tells she told the publication for its June issue. “I would write, and pain would turn into art, and art would turn into healing, and the healing turned into a record. And then I was nominated for a Grammy!”

In 2014, Kesha sued longtime produced Dr. Luke for sexual and emotional abuse she claims he put her through during their years of working together. Part of that abuse caused the singer to develop an eating disorder, which she also discussed in the new interview.

She said he would call her “a fat f------ refrigerator,” adding: “The final straw was when I was with my mom at a family dinner party and I was so anxious. Driving home, I had to pull over, and I was like, I can’t keep this secret anymore. It was scary, but I finally put my foot down and chose life."

Now, the pop star is outspoken about women's rights and has become the face of the #MeToo movement, leading to being honored as one of Time's 100 Most Influential People. Read the full interview here.
