This Spider The Size of a Human Hand Might Be in Maine’s Future
Here's a question you never want to ask.. Could a spider the size of your palm that flies really make its way to our beautiful state of Maine?
It honestly sounds like something straight out of a horror movie, but the spider experts are saying it’s an absolute possibility within the next next decade.
Meet the Joro spider, a bright yellow, red, and blue-striped spider that can really grow as big as a human hand.
According to the New York Post, this spider comes all the way from Asia and have already been scene spreading across the Southeast, creeping there way into the Northeast. Sightings have been reported as close as Massachusetts.
A lot of us are wondering how they could have gotten here in the first place and that’s because young Joro spiders use a method called “ballooning,” releasing silk threads that catch the wind and carry them long distances. This is their version of air travel.
This is horrifying.
Below is a video from NBC New York YouTube covering how terrifying this spider is and how a year ago it was making it's way up the east coast.
But let’s try to calm your nerves, even though they are big and bold, they are considered harmless to humans.
As per the report, apparently they aren't aggressive, rarely bite, and their fangs are too small to really break your skin.

Scientists are keeping an eye on how they might establish themselves in northern states and if they do arrive in Maine, you’d probably see them in late summer hanging out in huge, golden webs.
So yes, a palm-sized spider could eventually make it’s way to Maine, but thankfully, they haven’t been spotted yet.
