The jaws-of-life was used to extract an Aroostook County woman from her vehicle after a car and logging truck collided Wednesday morning on US Highway 1 in Orient.

The Maine State Police said 32-year-old Robert Grass of Brookton, Maine was driving a loaded logging truck north on Route 1 when 63-year-old Susan Hanscom failed to yield the right-of-way, and pulled out in front of him.

Police said Grass saw Hanscom’s vehicle pull out into the roadway and tried to stop but was unable to avoid hitting her.  When the two vehicles collided, the truck continued north and Hanscom’s vehicle was spun 180 degrees, ending up in the ditch.

Hanscom was trapped in her car and the Danforth Fire Department and Houlton Fire Department used the jaws-of-life  to extract her from her vehicle. She was transported to Houlton Regional Hospital by Houlton Ambulance for serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Grass was not injured, police say.

Hanscom’s car was totaled in the crash. The logging truck sustained operable damage and was moved from the roadway and parked in a nearby lot.

Corporal Dennis Quint and Trooper Scott Duff responded to the crash which is still under investigation.
