Ken Jennings Takes Playful Jab at Maine Staple on ‘Jeopardy!’
One of America's most popular game shows on television is Jeopardy!. The weeknight game show is still rotating hosts since the passing of Alex Trebek, with Mayim Bialik and Ken Jennings sharing duties.
Astute viewers from Maine may have noticed a playful little jab levied at a food staple of the state inside a clue on the December 5 episode. Host Ken Jennings narrated this clue:
Jennings doesn't write every single clue used during episodes of Jeopardy!, but he is credited with being part of the creative staff. It certainly feels like he put his personal spin on this one, and it appears Mr. Jennings enjoys a good lobster roll, just not the Maine variety.
The differences between a Maine lobster roll and a Connecticut lobster roll are pretty substantial. According to Delish, a traditional Maine lobster roll feature fresh Maine lobster meat that is chilled, slathered in mayo, then stuffed into a bun with the occasional green item like celery or chives.
A traditional Connecticut lobster roll is on the opposite side of the spectrum. That lobster roll is served warm, with fresh lobster that isn't dressed, on a bun that is toasted. From there, you're supposed to dip your lobster roll into a side dish of succulent melted butter.
Here in Maine, Connecticut lobster rolls are typically served with chilled lobster, and the melted butter is often part of the roll itself versus being a side dish. Call it the Maine alteration on a classic.
Ken Jennings has officially answered this Jeopardy! clue incorrectly.
