Bridge Construction Will Limit Access To Maine’s Gulf Hagas & Apalachian Trail Heads
It's almost as certain as death and taxes are in this world: from the time the snow melts in the spring, to the time it falls in the winter, road construction crews can be found in almost any spot in the state of Maine, taking advantage of every minute we have to work on clear, unfrozen bridges and roadways.
What does this mean for motorists in Vacationland? Sometimes its delays, sometimes it's detours.
For those who hope to head to Piscataquis County to hike the Grand Canyon of Maine, Gulf Hagas, you may want to plan ahead as there's an upcoming bridge construction project that's going to close a section of the area folks use to access that spot.
According to the Maine Appalachian Trail Club (or the MATC for short) post, the closure is scheduled to take place very soon.
"Attention Gulf Hagas and 100 Mile Wilderness hikers and campers: as of July 15th, access to the Gulf Hagas trail heads and the Appalachian Trail Trail crossing on the Katahdin Ironworks Road will only be possible from the Northern Hedgehog Gate on the Greenville side. All access from Route 11 on the Brownville side will be closed until at least August 12th (perhaps longer) due to bridge construction at Bog Brook and Sucker Brook."

Again, you will be able to access the area via the gate on the Greenville side, just not via Route 11 in Brownville, so plan accordingly.
The MATC said they'll be updating posts with information on the construction progress as it takes place. They also plan to let folks know when the trail heads are open once again.
