Ego in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ Will Be the ‘Biggest Visual Effect of All Time’
The latest Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 trailer saved the biggest reveal for last when Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill finally met his father, Kurt Russell’s Ego. But that was just a taste of Russell’s character.
As comic book fans know, Ego has both a human form and a planet form – Russell’s Ego the Living Planet is quite literally a living planet. Marvel has kept the much larger, digital version of Russell’s character tightly under wraps, so far only giving a brief sneak peak at his bearded human form. In the new issue of Empire Magazine, director James Gunn teased just how massive the living planet is going to be on the big screen. The director told the magazine that Ego was the film’s biggest technical challenge, which is saying something for a franchise full of otherworldly creatures set in space:
We have over a trillion polygons on Ego’s planet. It’s the biggest visual effect of all time. There’s nothing even close to it. Which is cool.
The cast also covers the latest issue of the magazine, which features a handful of new photos. There's better look at the human Ego, plus Yondu (Michael Rooker) and Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and the rest of the gang.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 also features the return of Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, plus newcomers Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, and Sylvester Stallone and Michael Rosenbaum in mystery roles. The sequel hits theaters on May 5.
