Green Day performed at the American Music Awards last night (Nov. 20), actually bringing some rock to the ceremony. While jamming “Bang Bang,” the group broke out into the chant, “No Trump / No KKK / No fascist USA.”

Like most award shows these days, there was no rock to be found within the 2016 American Music Awards nominees, even though there were five categories classified under “Pop/Rock.” Despite the absence of rock within the nominees, Green Day showcased the genre at the ceremony by performing live.

During the bridge of “Bang Bang,” Green Day took inspiration from Millions of Dead Cops (MDC) and the hardcore band’s anthem “Born to Die.” The MDC track opens with the declaration, “No war / No KKK / No fascist USA,” so the boys simply modified one word to bring it into 2016.

Green Day have been one of the most politically outspoken mainstream acts in recent history, going back to the Bush years at the turn of this century. Billie Joe Armstrong recently wrote after Trump’s win, "Our social progress got punched in the face. Hard. It's hard to tell if we made any progress at all.. the dark side of our better angels have spoken.. They gloat.. They cheer.. I pity them. I pity them because they have no clue what they've gotten our country into. Or the world for that matter."
