Garbage Truck Strikes Power Lines on Route 1 in Bridgewater
Maine State Police say high winds and a mechanical issue led to a tractor trailer accident on U.S. Route 1 in Bridgewater Wednesday afternoon.
At around 12:45 p.m., 31-year-old Matthew Kilcollins of Mars Hill was driving a Casella garbage truck/trailer north on Route 1. Due to high winds and a mechanical failure, the top cover of the trailer opened and went upright, adding about 7 extra feet to the height of the trailer.
Police say the trailer struck power lines that were hanging across the highway, damaging the lines. Kilcollins was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.
Maine State Police, The Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office, Emera Maine and Fairpoint Communications all responded to the crash.
Crews were on scene for about 2 ½ hours repairing the damage.
