A head-on collision Thursday afternoon involving a tractor trailer and a pickup truck on Route 1A in Hamlin claimed the life of a 27-year-old Fort Kent man.

Maine State Police say 59-year-old Kenneth Cormier of Grand Isle was driving north in a 2017 Peterbilt shortly before 2:30 p.m. Meanwhile, Micheal Marquis of Fort Kent was traveling south in a 2009 Chevrolet pickup. Police say the pickup veered into the northbound lane and into the path of the tractor trailer. Cormier attempted to avoid the crash but could not.

Marquis was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say Cormier was not injured in the crash.

In addition to Maine State Police, other emergency responders included: Van Buren Fire and Ambulance, The Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office, Presque Isle Police Department, Maine DOT and Maine DEP.

Route 1A in Hamlin was shut down for about five hours Thursday while the crash was investigated and the vehicles were removed from the scene. Both vehicles were totaled.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation. Rain and fog was reported in the area at the time.
