The former Maine Governor John Reed passed away on Wednesday, October 31 at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C. He was 91-years-old.

Reed (R) was in office between 1959 and 1966. He founded a network of universities in Maine and started the first education channel.

Current Gov. Paul LePage released a statement in which he said: ‘Maine has lost a great man with the passing of Governor John Reed,’ the statement continued: ‘He led our State well and served the people of Maine honorably.’

Reed was born on January 5, 1921 to a prominent Fort Fairfield potato grower. After graduating from University of Maine, Reed join the family business but thereafter he ran for office and won. First he served as a House Representative and then he won the gubernatorial seat.

LePage also said: ‘Having the opportunity to have met him, I know he was a kind man, dedicated Navy veteran, and passionate about public service. It is a sad day for Maine as we have lost a man who contributed so much to our great State.’
